Atlantic Waves

Atlantic Waves (image above) by Robert Henke (who releases music under the name Monolake) is both a networked interactive performance and installation (called Linear Grid, images below).

The original idea was to find a simple way for me to perform shows together with Deadbeat using network technology. Scott Monteith (Deadbeat) and me came up with it during a coffee break at the NAMM show 2001. The first performance happened at the MUTEK festival Montreal in 2002 between me in Berlin and Scott on stage in Montreal. From the very beginning the project also had a strong visual component since the interface is projected for the audience to follow the actions of the two participants. In more recent versions of the software the visual part became more and more an artwork in itself and the interaction between sound and image became much more complex… [the software] also contains a chat feature, embedded in the graphical interface. This allows the audience to follow also the chat between the performers. The audience always sees exactly the same information as the performers.

Below is a sample extract of the audio produced by the Atlantic Waves software.
