The following is a selection of two audio networked works by Zurich based artist Rodrigo Derteano.

the distance (images above) is a fascinating idea for an installation which calculates the distance from the installations location to various websites depending on the time it takes to ping them on line. Time to distance is calculated according to the speed of sound (video explaining how the installation works) and this distance is then used to generate echo/delay effects as if the user of the installation was standing within an architectural space continually reconfiguring itself in size and as a result acoustic properties.
“the distance” reflects the way geographical distance collapses through the use of communication technologies. It makes it possible to interact with the physical structure of the net, using it as a resonant body.
Furthermore, the constant acceleration and deacceleration of the data transmision [sic] time causes the virtual sonic rooms to expand and shrink, which generates Doppler-effects. The incoming sound is not only delayed, but pitch-shifted, giving the impression of being constantly accelerated and deaccelerated. It is possible to type in more than one URL, opening several virtual rooms at once, which get overlayed and interact with the site of the installation. This way, “the distance” turns into a complex musical interface.

a[l]locator (image above) is a work which could be classified as a work of net.art similar in many ways to Googlehouse and My Google Body. Users enter a chatroom and the conversation that occurs between them is used to search google image search and generate a visual collage according to current files found online and how they are indexed.
