Some interesting work posted on the weblog VVork a day or two ago (difficult to tell with this mainly image based blog) shows the work of [O+A] who specialise in:
Transforming the sonic identity of public and private space
[O+A] are Bruce Odland and Sam Auinger who state they:
are working to regain the information from the noise of our environment by musically filtering and playing it back in real-time. We are effecting the quality of our sound world, and trying to make humane harmonic environments. At this time we need harmony more than ever before.
All work is primarily (and obviously) focused on the audio with a few exceptions such as Hive Music. The work is not overly complex but interesting in it’s simplicity to convert latent audio and occasionally energy (solar energy in Traffic Mantra) into sonic environments, usually catching passersby unexpectedly. I can only imagine how nerve racking it is to drive past 30/70 (see videos).
NOTE: [O+A] use of built objects in public space (e.g. Blue Moon above middle row, Harmonic Bridge above bottom row, 30/70 above top row) to transform / compose environmental audio reminds me of Janek Schaeffer’s Memory Museum.
